For thousands of years, hydrotherapy (also known as aqua physiotherapy) has been a beneficial form of therapy for alleviating pain, inflammation, weakness, and stress.
Water movement has numerous physiological effects on the body, whether active, aided, or completely inert. Water's external pressure encourages venous return, which helps to condition the heart. Warmth and buoyancy in the water help alleviate muscle spasms while also supporting joints through movement, which has clear applications for frozen shoulder, high tone, and post-surgical rehabilitation.
Buoyancy also reduces the effective body weight; hydrotherapy allows those who are unable to walk or who have difficulty maintaining balance to simulate land activities in a safe and supportive environment. As a bonus, water provides excellent resistance and strength training.
